No. 4-seeded Frontenac softball took a 4-2 loss in eight innings Monday afternoon against No.5 Jefferson West during the Class 3A state quarterfinals at Baker University in Baldwin City.

Jefferson West pitcher Addison Schwinn kept the explosive Raiders offense in check — Frontenac scored 54 runs during three regional tournament games last week — and earned the win with two runs (one earned) on three hits and six strikeouts and two walks over eight innings.

The two runs are the second-lowest total of the season, behind the Raiders’ 4-1 loss May 11 against 4A state qualifier and top seed Fort Scott.

Haydn Goodwin, Ace Ogle and Mia Bloom each had one of the hits for the Raiders. Goodwin and Bloom each doubled and Goodwin and Bloom each drove in a run.

Jefferson West scored two runs in the third and two in the eighth. Frontenac pushed across single runs in the first and sixth.

Gracen McLaren and Hadley Goodwin worked walks against Schwinn in the first and then McLaren scored on Haydn Goodwin’s double.

The Tigers scored their two in the third with an Emma Dean sacrifice fly and Taryn Taylor’s RBI single.

Frontenac tied it up with Bloom’s two-out RBI double bringing home Rain Warren. Warren reached on a two-base error by the third baseman.

The Raiders were not able to capitalize more on Jefferson West’s five errors.

Ashley Moser started the top of the eighth by reaching on a bunt single to third and then advanced to second on an error by the third baseman. Joslynn Sutton also reached on a bunt single and both Moser and Sutton scored on Harriet Dean’s single.

Ogle loaded the bases with Tigers but got her pitching counterpart to fly out to right fielder Blakely Niegsch to maintain the damage at 4-2.

Schwinn worked through an error with two groundouts and a strikeout to end the game.

Ogle ended with the loss and she allowed four runs (all earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks over eight innings.

The Raiders finish their first season under head coach Jess Murphy and featuring seven new starters with a 22-5 record. Frontenac won 22 of its final 25 games after starting the season 0-2.
