The morning sun floods into Highland Cemetery on Memorial Day. RON WOMBLE/THE MORNING SUN

As the sun rose, Monday morning, volunteers with almost military precision placed about 1,000 U.S. flags along the lanes that wend through Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg. Of those, 908 flags honored specific veterans, organizers said. The annual Avenue of Flags requires year-long fundraising and planning, but for that one day in May, transforms Highland Park into a place of honor and reverence.
