Janice Kay Gott

Janice Kay Gott (Main) passed away peacefully at her home in Valley Falls, Kansas on May 20, 2026, at the age of 82.

Janice was born at home on May 29, 1943, in Mindenmines, Missouri, to Walter LeRoy and Mary Abbie Main (Ford). The ninth of ten children, her bright mind and dedication shone early, leading her to graduate as a high school valedictorian. Janice briefly attended Pittsburg State University then began working at the U.S. Census Bureau, where she dedicated many years of her professional life.

Following her retirement from the Bureau, Janice and her husband moved to a hobby farm where they enjoyed a quiet and peaceful country life. Janice loved being surrounded by nature and her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her two beloved sons.

Janice's smile, laughter, and joy were infectious, and she was loved by all who had the privilege to know her: from her neighbors and community to strangers at casino slot machines where she gambled the night away to gatherings of friends and family. Janice loved playing games, watching John Wayne films, and listening to country music. She especially loved the many trips she took with her sons to places like San Francisco, Las Vegas, and the Caribbean. Janice lived life fiercely, with a steadfast and lifelong commitment to equity, justice, and kindness for all.

She is survived by her son Dean Goodwin and his husband Michael Hall of Cathedral City, California, and her son Gary Goodwin, who was a deeply caring and dedicated caregiver for Janice in her final years at her home. She is also survived by her brother, Billy Main and his wife Virginia, of Pittsburg, Kansas, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents; her late husband, Dennis Gott; and her siblings: Patricia White of Frontenac, Peggy Chambers of Kansas City, Mary Lou Frayer of Mindenmines, Jimmy Main of Wichita, and Donnie Main.

A celebration of life for family and close friends will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8. Donations in Janice's memory can be made to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund (CureAlz.org).
