GIRARD, Kan. — At the end of a relatively short meeting early this week, the Girard City Council applauded the efforts of a former city councilman to help the city look its best.
Mayor Nick Cheney noted former councilman Dennis Everett’s work to repair the fountain at City Hall.
“I want to thank Dennis Everett for buying the pump for the water feature up front and installing it,” said Cheney. “He also fixed the broken light for the flagpole out front.”
Summer officially arrives this weekend, which means more activities and more visitors in town.
Councilman Darrell Westhoff noted two upcoming golf tournaments taking place at the Girard Municipal Golf Course —Fallen Trojans Memorial Golf Tournament (June 19) and Craig Crespino Memorial Golf Tournament (June 20).
“We’ve got a big weekend coming up at the golf course,” said Westhoff. “Friday is the Fallen Trojans Tournament where they honor six or seven honorees for past athletes and students at Girard High School that have passed away and It's a very good thing. They give anywhere from eight to 12 scholarships each year. Saturday is the big one with the Craig Crespino Memorial Tournament. So there will be a lot of people in town and hopefully the railroad tracks are finished by then.”
Councilman Morgan Johnson expressed his appreciation for the work of city staff.
“I’d like to thank the city employees and the police department, fire department, for all they do,” he said. “I’m excited to see these projects the city has going. It looks like we are going to see some stuff moving pretty quick with all the pipe and the hydrants sitting out there. Summer is in full effect now so make sure everyone is keeping their cars locked and watch out for kiddos playing outside.”
In other business, the council accepted the resignation of Rylee Worley and hired Kaylee Peach as a clubhouse attendant for Girard Municipal Golf Course at the rate of $12 an hour upon the successful completion of paperwork. The council additionally approved a one-year retention bonus for Derick Burke.
The next Girard City Council meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 29, at the Girard City Hall on the southeast side of the building, located at 120 N.
