EMPORIA, Kan. -- St. Mary’s Colgan didn’t take full advantage of scoring opportunities in the first and third innings.
However, the Panthers cashed in all their chips during a four-run fifth inning en route to a 9-4 victory over fourth-seeded Inman on Monday afternoon in a Class 2-1A softball quarterfinal game at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Colgan (25-3) stretched its winning streak to 11 games and advanced to the semifinal round at 11 a.m. Thursday in Lawrence. The fifth-seeded Panthers face top-seeded Dexter/Cedar Vale (28-2), which rallied to beat Central Heights 7-3.
The Panthers trailed 2-1 when Brooklyn Barrows dropped a single into shallow center field to start the fifth inning, and with one out, she stole second base and took third on a wild pitch. Kara Osborn hit a grounder to shortstop, but Adilynn Alcala’s throw to the plate was late as Barrows scored standing up.
Drew Dayton reached on a fielder’s choice as the throw to second base was too late to retire Osborn. With two outs, Callie Lundy drilled a double to deep left-center to score both runners.
“I was excited,” Lundy said. “I was looking for an outside ball. I was ready for it. We’ve been practicing it all week. So I was ready for that outside curve.
“I had no idea (the ball sailed over the outfielder’s head). I just ran,” she said with a laugh.
On the next pitch, Lundy stole third and continued home on an errant throw for a 5-2 lead.
“She was on fire,” Colgan coach Cassie Rhuems said. “She swings the bat so well. She’s kind of jumped around in our lineup. I had her in the leadoff spot early in the year, and I realized she was going to be an RBI hitter for us, so we moved her to the 4 (spot). She has a lot of confidence. She’s just a great ballplayer, and she’s coming into her own.”
Taylor Froese doubled home a run in the Inman fifth, but the Panthers answered with a run in the sixth as Addie Bettega singled to right with one out, took second when Barrows walked and scored on Osborn’s two-out single to center.
Colgan added three unearned runs in the seventh. Addie Morris walked with two outs and came around to score on Kylee Kretchmar’s infield hit and a two-base throwing error. Kretchmar scored when Bettega reached on a three-base outfield error, and Barrows doubled to deep left to score Bettega.
Lundy and Barrows each hit a single and double to lead Colgan’s 10-hit attack, and Osborn and Lundy drove in two runs apiece.
“The kids stayed after it, kept chipping away,” Colgan coach Cassie Rhuems said. “And ‘B’ (Bella Ascanio) was better at the end of the game than she was early.”
Winning pitcher Bella Ascanio (25-3) allowed seven hits, struck out 11 batters and walked four while throwing 137 pitches, 87 for strikes. She threw 91 pitches in the first four innings, 46 in the last three innings.
“No, I’m not tired, not at all,” Ascanio said. “When I get in there, I keep throwing as hard as I can. A lot of curve balls and drop balls. I’m ready to keep going.”
“She’s a dog,” Rhuems said. “She could have folded. She had a rough couple of innings. She wasn’t able to locate where she wanted to locate. She really dialed in mentally and realized how good she is and took control of the hitters. That last inning could have been really different. Top of the lineup, two really good hitters in the 3-4 holes and she got them both to pop out off the hands. Credit to her, and credit to our defense.”
Both teams scored a run in the first inning, and they came in contrasting styles.
Osborn reached second base on a dropped flyball, and she moved to third when Drew Dayton beat out a roller to second base for a hit.
Ascanio beat out a bunt single, and Osborn came home on the throw to first base.
Lyla Levin tied the game with one swing of the bat, a two-out shot over the fence in left-center field for her third home run of the season.
The Teutons took a 2-1 lead in the third on Eleanor Thimmesch’s two-out double and three consecutive walks.
