St. Pius X to host alumni event

PITTSBURG, Kan. — With Pitt State graduates scattered across the state, St. Pius X Catholic Student Center has decided to host an alumni event near Wichita on Friday, July 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will be held at a private home at 15 Norfolk Drive in Eastborough, Kansas. Parking and a shuttle will be available at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at 124 N. Roosevelt Street in Wichita.

Building stronger families with games

PITTSBURG, Kan. — During Tuesday night’s 6/20 celebrations, kids and their parents could opt for some inside fun at the Pittsburg Law Enforcement Center with Bonding Thru Board Games. The event was cosponsored by the K-State Wildcat Extension and the Pittsburg Family Response Advocates. According to Family and Child Development Agent Michelle Broxterman of the Wildcat Extension, there are six traits strong families share: spending time together, showing affection and appreciation, open communication and listening, spiritual wellness, the ability to cope, and a commitment to each other.

Wacky Wednesday a big hit at CCHM

PITTSBURG, Kan. — For the second week in a row, the Crawford County Historical Museum has hosted over 200 kids and adults during their Wacky Wednesday summer program. This week’s theme was all about art. Artistic Impressions by Angela gave kids removable tattoos while Sassy Paws provided some of their poodles as canvases for kids to draw on with washable ink.

Family hosts community events to honor father

PITTSBURG, Kan.— This coming weekend, July 1 and 2, the Nelson family will be hosting a few area events to honor longtime USD 250 teacher and coach Lee Nelson. Nelson taught and coached football, basketball, and track during his career with USD 250. He served 30 years at Pittsburg High School, Community Middle School and at Lakeside Junior High during the 1970s and 1980s.

Will Rogers Day at CCHM

PITTSBURG, Kan. — For the third consecutive week, over 200 kids and adults visited the Crawford County Historical Museum in Pittsburg. Dubbed “Wacky Wednesdays”, Museum Director Amanda Minton has planned activities and games for area kids each week at the museum. Each Wednesday, there is a different theme for visitors as they participate in games, arts and crafts, and other activities.

Special Olympics returns to Holiday Lanes

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Holiday Lanes in Pittsburg was nearly bursting at the gills on Wednesday as 225 Special Olympics athletes participated in their annual bowling tournament. In addition to the athletes, there were 50 more volunteers and coaches. One reason for such a large crowd, according to SEK Regional Director Olivia Ryan, was that this year’s activities were scheduled for a single day.

Wacky Wednesday kicks off final stretch of summer

PITTSBURG, Kan. — After three hugely successful events, Crawford County Historical Museum Director Amanda Minton kicked off the last few weeks of summer with the final three Wacky Wednesdays at the museum. Taking a break during the week of Independence Day, Minton started the homestretch off with Disney princesses. The little mermaid Ariel (portrayed by Jacqueline Johnson, of Erie) was joined by Belle (Rayne Defebaugh, of Erie) and sleeping beauty Aurora (Karli Bash, of Chanute) to sing and dance with museum visitors.

Coal camps and company houses

FRANKLIN, Kan. — Beginning July 1, the Miners’ Hall Museum (MHM) is hosting the “Preserving the Past: Coal Camps and Company Houses” exhibit on the grounds of the museum. The exhibit runs through Sept. 23 with special presentations scheduled throughout. The Museum currently has a restored Miner’s House on the grounds that is open to the public as part of the exhibit.

KCC ends cold weather rule on March 31

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Cold Weather Rule ends on Friday, March 31. That means Kansans who are behind on electric and natural gas utility bills will be subject to disconnection of service unless they contact their utility company to make payment arrangements. March 31 is also the last day to apply for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), a federally funded program administered by the Kansas Department of Children and Families.
