Girard baseball nips Prairie View 4-3

Girard scored four early runs and held on to edge Prairie View 4-3 Thursday afternoon in prep baseball action in Girard.

The Trojans (18-5), ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, scored a run in the second inning when Kam Smith singled to right, moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt, took third on Jaxton Smith’s groundout and scored on Blake Brokob’s single to left.

Girard bunched four hits to extend its lead to 4-0 in the third. Briggs Buckingham singled to right and scored on Bryor Schultz’s double to center. Robbie Bruning singled to put two runners on, and both came home on Smith’s two-out single to center.

Buckingham hit a single and double and Smith drove in two runs for the Trojans.

Girard starter Aiden Ashbacher gave up two hits and two unearned runs, walked one and struck out two in three-plus innings. Drake Smith allowed an unearned run and two hits while striking out three in three innings of relief, and Bruning fanned two batters in the seventh.

Buffalos pitcher Matthew Stolle struck out 10 and walked one while allowing eight hits in five innings.

Karter Hawkins had two hits for the Buffalos (7-12).
