Avery Taggart, former basketball player and graduate assistant coach at Pittsburg State, has been hired as an assistant at Maryville University in St. Louis.

Taggart, from Eureka, Mo., in the St. Louis area, played four seasons at Missouri Southern before transferring to play one season at PSU for coach Jeff Boschee, who also coached him at MSSU.

Last season Taggart was a graduate assistant on Boschee’s staff as he earned his master’s degree in sports management.

“Coach Taggart is a rising star in the college coaching world,” Maryville coach Kramer Soderberg said in a release. “It is very clear that Avery will use his experiences as both a player and graduate assistant to make a significant impact on our program. Some people are natural-born coaches, and Coach Taggart most certainly fits that description.

Maryville also hired Dorian Hobbs Jr. as associate head coach. Hobbs spent the last three years as head coach at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo.

The NCAA Division II Saints finished 3-25 last season, including a 93-66 loss at Pittsburg State on Nov. 20, 2025.
