Girard junior Kam Smith won Class 3A pitcher of the year and six St. Mary’s Colgan players earned all-state recognition from the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches, highlighting the awards released on Monday.
Colgan sophomore pitcher Gabe Brown, senior first baseman Brock Radell, senior third baseman Brady Crossland and senior outfielder Jayden Brown were named all-Class 2-1A first team, while senior catcher Carston Simmons and senior middle infielder Brady Badart received second team.
Colgan finished the season 20-7 overall and defeated the top three seeds at the state tournament (No. 1 Thomas More Prep, No. 2 Spearville and No. 3 Frankfort) to earn the Panthers their 19th state title under head coach Mike Watt and their 23rd overall.
Southeast earned three honorable mentions in 2-1A — sophomore pitcher Carter Buzard, junior catcher Tyler Warner and junior middle infielder Solomon Scott.
Marmaton Valley senior pitcher Tyler Lord and senior utility Garrett Morrison were named second team and honorable mention, respectively.
Thomas More Prep junior Ty Schmeidler won player of the year, Trinity Catholic senior Drew Dechant pitcher of the year and Rossville’s Kenny Swart coach of the year in 2-1A.
First-time state champion Girard had Smith and sophomore middle infielder Bryor Schultz earn first team.
Fellow state qualifier Frontenac matched Girard with two 3A all-state selections in senior pitcher Grant Nickle on the first team and junior third baseman Jake Murphy second team.
Girard finished the season 24-5 and CNC League champion Frontenac ended 17-5.
Baxter Springs junior pitcher Logan Abbott earned second-team honors, as well.
Cheney senior Reece Tolar won player of the year and Council Grove’s Matt Wilkens coach of the year to join Smith as one of the three major award winners in 3A.
