Frontenac softball overpowers Girard in sweep

GIRARD, Kan. — Frontenac softball dominated host Girard in the CNC League finale Monday night, winning 13-1 in five innings and then 14-0 in five innings to complete the run-rule sweep.

Freshman pitcher Ace Ogle, who crossed 100 career strikeouts her previous time out last Friday against Mount Vernon (Mo.), tossed a no-hitter in the opener with seven strikeouts and two walks over five innings.

Hadley Goodwin homered among her three hits and drove in six runs. Gracen McLaren also had three hits and Paige Unruh, Haydn Goodwin, Rain Warren and Addison VanBecelaere each had two of the Raiders' 16 hits. Stevi Likely and Ogle also had a hit each.

McLaren, both Goodwins, Ogle and VanBecelaere recorded doubles.

Emilee Hanks and Avery Brooks worked the walks against Ogle. Hanks scored Girard's lone run in the first inning.

Hadley Goodwin earned the win in the nightcap and dominated with no runs on two hits and 10 strikeouts and one walk over five innings. She homered and drove in two more runs for a doubleheader with two homers and eight RBI.

Ogle homered twice and drove in six, highlighted by a grand slam during the eight-run second inning. Unruh also homered among her three hits and two RBI; Likely finished with two runs scored, two hits and three RBI.

Jazmyn Kaufman and Addison Bowman had Girard's lone hits of the night. Bowman hit a two-out triple in the third and Kaufman singled leading off the fifth.

Frontenac improved to 17-3 on the season and finished league play 10-2 with 10 straight wins after opening losses against unbeaten league champion St. Mary's Colgan. The Raiders return home next Monday for a varsity doubleheader against Fort Scott.

Girard dropped to 8-13 overall and ended league play 3-9. The Trojans continue their slew of home games Thursday against Fort Scott; the Tigers are 18-1 entering Wednesday's game at Gardner-Edgerton with their only loss against Pittsburg.
