Frontenac baseball wins regional championship

Frontenac baseball earned a trip to the Class 3A state tournament next week by defeating No. 3-seeded Anderson County 10-1 in the regional championship Tuesday at Mike Falletti Field.

Senior pitcher Grant Nickle earned the win for the Raiders and he allowed one run (unearned) on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks over 5 1/3 innings. Brock Wiemers pitched the final 1 2/3 and struck out two and walked none.

The Raiders scored three runs in the second, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth. They benefited from 12 walks, a storyline common in both regional baseball and softball games featuring county teams.

Kale Coomes led the offense with two hits and two RBI and fellow sophomore Gunner Horyna also drove in two runs. Jake Murphy and Horyna both scored two runs.

Horyna, Nickle and Kane Mjelde each worked two walks and Horyna also stole two bases.

Frontenac improved to 17-4 on the season.

The Raiders broke open what had been a close regional semifinal game between traditional rivals with five runs in the third and then five more in the fourth.

Jake Wegner's two-run single in the fourth and Jack Spear's two-run single in the fifth proved to be decisive blows against the Lions.

Spear and Kane Mjelde led the offense with three RBI and Wegner, Spear and Jaxon Varsolona each finished with two hits. Wegner scored three runs and Gage James, Jake Murphy and Gunner Horyna each scored two.

Kale Coomes earned the win and he allowed two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks over five innings.

Varsolona's RBI single walked it off in the fifth, scoring Wegner from third. The Lions intentionally walked Spear to load the bases with Raiders.
