PITTSBURG, Kan. — Community members of all ages are invited to celebrate 620 Day, an event that commemorates Pittsburg’s area code.
“With 620 Day being on a Saturday, because we always celebrate that on actually June 20, we have amplified it a bit this year to also celebrate Pittsburg's 150,” Community Development Specialist Bethany Kendrick told the Morning Sun.
The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on 2nd Street from the Broadway intersection to Walnut. Second street will be closed and a portion of Pine Street, between 2nd and 3rd Street, will be blocked off to traffic, as well. Businesses such as Embellish Boutique and El Caballo will still be accessible to the public.
More than 60 vendors will be set up for the event, featuring a variety of food, crafts, art and other wares. To entertain children of all ages, the event will have face painting, balloon animals, a miniature golf course, Pop-a-Shot basketball and a golf simulator.
A car show, which is new this year, will take place on Pine Street. Starting at 7 p.m., Eastern Heights, a country band based in Branson, will perform a free concert on a stage at the intersection of Second and Pine Streets.
620 Day merchandise such as t-shirts and tote bags will be available for purchase and volunteers will hand out paper fans for free.
“There are a lot of committees of people that have put in many hours of hard work for this event to make it truly something special for our community,” Kendrick said.
Several downtown businesses, such as Drop the H, The Literary Cat Co. and TOAST, will offer discounts and specials in honor of 620 Day.
“620 Day is something that is really exciting for me to be able to be a part of helping carry on the now annual event in kind of a standing tradition for our Pittsburg community,” Kendrick said. “We just want everyone to have a great time on Saturday.”
620 Day is sponsored by the Downtown Advisory Board, Explore Crawford County, GN Bank, Pitt150, Ryan-Dittmann Insurance, and Voyage Insurance Group.
