Sports in Kansas released its all-state honors for classes 6A through 2-1A on Thursday and Friday and Girard junior pitcher Kam Smith highlighted the winners from Crawford County high schools by repeating as Class 3A pitcher of the year.
Smith finished the season 8-1 with a 0.33 ERA and 111 strikeouts over 64 1/2 innings pitched and he pitched a shutout with 10 strikeouts in the 3A state championship game against Silver Lake in Manhattan.
Smith helped the Trojans win their first state championship in baseball and head coach Bob Fornelli also took 3A coach of the year honors.
The Trojans finished their season 24-5.
CLASS 5A
Pittsburg senior pitcher Beck Fern earned a spot on the second team and senior Cole Hayden and junior Max Busch both received honorable mention.
Salina Central’s Grayton Gross and Kansas City Piper’s Myles Ross shared player of the year, Arkansas City’s Jordey Pierce won pitcher of the year and St. Thomas Aquinas head coach Rick Sabath and Great Bend head coach Michael Stettinger shared coach of the year honors.
CLASS 4A
Independence senior infielder Kamen Sprague became the only baseball player from the Southeast Kansas League to earn first-team all-state honors this season.
Sprague’s teammates Kellen Lanning and Spencer Crain were both honorable mention.
Fort Scott senior infielder Kanin Brown earned second team and Dexter Williams and Kaden Cannon both were named honorable mention.
Chanute senior catcher Brady Alonzo also cracked the second team and Jacob Thompson honorable mention.
Parsons senior Connor Largent was also named honorable mention.
State champion Mulvane swept the top individual honors with Parker Clubb player, Grey Sanders pitcher and head coach Steve Nelson coach of the year.
CLASS 3A
Girard sophomore infielder Bryor Schultz, junior infielder Robbie Bruning and senior outfielder Aiden Ashbacher joined Kam Smith on the first team.
Junior catcher Blake Brokob and freshman outfielder Briggs Buckingham both received second team and Jaxton Smith, Ben Cullen and Drake Smith were all honorable mention.
Frontenac senior pitcher Grant Nickle, sophomore catcher Kane Mjelde, junior infielder Jake Murphy and junior utility Brock Wiemers earned first team.
Sophomore pitcher Kale Coomes earned second team and Gunner Horyna, Gage James and Jake Wegner honorable mention for the CNC League champion and 3A state qualifier Raiders.
Baxter Springs junior battery mates Logan Abbott (pitcher) and Braydon Wade (catcher) and junior outfielder Brooks Walker all received second team. Their teammate Riley Daniel picked up honorable mention.
Riverton’s Levi Mann and Columbus’ Jayden Rodriguez and Jonas Stover each got honorable mention.
Russell/Victoria senior Max Evans received player of the year.
CLASS 2-1A
State champion St. Mary’s Colgan cleaned up with sophomore pitcher Gabe Brown, senior catcher Carston Simmons, senior infielders Brock Radell, Brady Crossland and Brady Badart and senior outfielder Jayden Brown all named first team. Lane Stultz received honorable mention for the 20-7 Panthers.
Southeast sophomore pitcher Gannon Hobbs and junior utility Solomon Scott both were named second team and Carter Buzard and Tyler Warner honorable mention.
Northeast freshman Wyatt Stansbury brought home honorable mention.
Thomas More Prep’s Ty Schmeidler won player of the year, Trinity Catholic’s Drew Dechant pitcher of the year and Frankfort’s Drue Henton coach of the year.
