ARMA, Kan. — The annual Arma VJ Homecoming, the longest festival in the United States celebrating the end of World War II, is seeking applicants for its veteran banner initiative.
Traditionally honoring those who have served in World War II, entries are expanding by eight spots for this year’s celebration, a staple in the Arma community since 1947. Through the initiative, the Arma VJ Homecoming committee selects local individual veterans, recognizing them on pole banners that are hung throughout the community.
According to president and leader of the Arma VJ Homecoming JoEllen Black, this year’s banner initiative is honoring those from the Korean War (1950-1953), Vietnam War (1955-1975), and Gulf War (1990-1991).
With eight spots added, there are a total of 16 spots available downtown to display a local veteran. Those interested are asked to email Black at joellenblack6@gmail.com or call 816-776-9644 and include the family member showcased, a large digital photo file, their name, hometown, military branch, and war/conflict. The prints are to be professionally scanned by Miller’s Professional Imaging in Pittsburg.
With a deadline to submit by Friday, June 26, the cost is $55 for one side of the banner, covering production costs.
The annual Arma VJ Homecoming is set to return to Viking Country in early August, marking 80 years. From pickleball to golf to dancing, the annual celebration is scheduled to take place from Thursday, Aug. 6, to Sunday, Aug. 9.
Black noted that the event is in need of volunteers. Those interested in volunteering can email armahomecomingassociation@gmail.com.
