Tyanna “Tanny” Hanahan passed away on June 1st, 2026, after a recent illness.
Tanny was born in Rifle, Colorado, on December 27th, 1946, to Edward and Aloha (Wilson) Hanahan. Tanny and her younger brother, Patrick, grew up in Rifle surrounded by family, as all of her grandparents and several extended families resided there.
She attended college at Central State in Oklahoma and majored in physical education. She completed a bachelor’s degree in teacher education. Tanny held an Elementary Physical Education teaching position in Oklahoma and Florida for 8 years. She completed a master’s degree in the Education of the Visually Impaired and Blind at the University of Texas in Austin in 1982. Tanny served as a teacher of the blind for the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center at Greenbush for 31 years, traveling 9 counties assisting students from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
Tanny enjoyed sports and played softball on several local teams in her younger years. She was a big Kansas City Chiefs fan and had running bets with a couple of old college friends she kept in touch with all her life. Her favorite leisure time activity was traveling and doing multiple trips in the states and abroad. She loved the planning of where to go and what to see. Tanny was godmother to Regina and Caroline Alexander and was dedicated to spending time with them, thus tagging along on family vacations. In her later years she and Regina took several cruises together, when they weren’t traveling, they were researching their next trip!
Tanny also enjoyed going to the theater. She made many trips to New York City and London to see shows on Broadway and the West End, and she was a season ticket holder to the New Theatre in Kansas City for many years.
Tanny led a life of service to teaching children and could be counted on to be ready to help whenever someone was in need.
Tanny was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Aloha Hanahan, her brother, Patrick Hanahan. She is survived by her Godchildren, Regina and Caroline Alexander, and her dearest friends.
Ms. Hanahan has been cremated according to her wishes. Graveside service will be Friday, June 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Frontenac, Kansas, with Father Josh Evans officiating.
