Crawford County high school boys and girls track and field athletes finished their seasons and some finished their careers Friday and Saturday in the KSHSAA State Championships at Wichita’s historic Cessna Stadium.
Frontenac’s girls tied for fifth in Class 3A with 31 points and Girard was 25th with 10. Hesston won the title with 79 points.
On the boys side in 3A, Girard finished ninth with 24 points and Frontenac was 35th with five.
Pittsburg’s girls were 13th in 5A with 24.5 points and the Purple Dragon boys took 16th with 15.
St. Mary’s Colgan finished 19th in 2A girls with 18 points, while Northeast was 23rd with 10.2 and Southeast 29th with 8.5.
On the 2A boys side, Colgan was 16th with 17 points, Southeast 22nd with 10 and Northeast 28th with six.
CLASS 5A
Pittsburg freshman Kyndal Bugni earned three medals during her first state meet. She finished second in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches), third in the long jump (17-11 3/4) and fourth in the triple jump (37-0).
Kylin Perry finished her career with a medal in the javelin, winning third (124-2).
On the boys side, senior De’Marus Partee claimed one more state medal with a third place in the 110-meter hurdles (14.68 seconds).
Fellow senior Malakai Meadows medaled with a fourth place in the triple jump (44-5 3/4) and Kordae Hayes placed fifth in the 300 hurdles (39.99).
CLASS 3A
Frontenac sophomore Reece Franklin repeated as state champion in the high jump (5-6) and placed fourth in the triple jump (36-7 3/4) for a second state medal.
In her first state meet, freshman Emerson Albright capped off a strong year of distance running with three individual medals, as she finished fourth in the 3,200 (11:43), fifth in the 800 (2:23) and sixth in the 1,600 (5:28).
The 4x800 of Cera Schenck, Abby Albright, Nora Anderson and Emerson Albright was fifth (10:00).
Girard’s 4x400 of Regan Oplotnik, Kennedy Keller, Karsyn O’Rand and Macy Mahnken finished fourth in 4:08.92 and set a school record.
The 4x100 of O’Rand, Mahnken, Oplotnik and Addison Bowman were seventh (50.25).
Oplotnik finished sixth in the 200 (25.85).
On the boys side, Girard junior William Bishop won a state title in the shot put (63-1/2) and senior Gannon Clark finished second in the javelin (190-7).
The 4x400 of Zeb Poland, Mason Adolph, Seth Wilson and Gavin Huber placed sixth (3:29) and Sammy Blair ran sixth in the 110 hurdles (14.86).
Frontenac’s Ethan Merrick placed fifth in the shot put (54-8) and eighth in the discus (153-11).
CLASS 2A
Colgan’s 4x800 of Mary Boschee, Alli Karleskint, Gillian Wilbert and Mari Gilmore won a state title (9:47.90) and the 4x400 of Kayla Hutchinson, Karleskint, Wilbert and Katie Paulie finished seventh (4:15).
Gilmore capped off her freshman season with two individual medals — fourth in the 3,200 (11:39) and eighth in the 1,600 (5:26).
Northeast senior Brooklyn Jackson ended her career with a state title in the shot put (38-5 3/4) and Maddison Villarreal finished eighth in the high jump (4-10).
Southeast junior Camryn Sanders finished second in the high jump (5-2) and Jackie Robinson placed eighth in the pole vault (9-6).
On the boys side, Colgan senior Klayton Adamson earned three medals with a third in the 200 (22.29), fifth in the 100 (11.14) and sixth in the long jump (21-2 1/2).
Colton Smithhisler placed fifth in the 3,200 (10:14).
Southeast senior Trey Sol Galindo finished second in the pole vault (14-0) and fellow senior Zayne Gabern took seventh in the 3,200 (10:21).
Northeast junior Tayven Willard finished third in the long jump (21-5 1/4).
