PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Pittsburg Police Department is warning Kia and Hyundai owners to exercise extra caution because of an increase in attempted vehicle thefts and criminal damage.
According to the PD, this is part of a nationwide trend in communities throughout the past several years. The attempted thefts or damage typically occur overnight or in the early morning hours, and suspects are targeting Kia and Hyundai vehicles, specifically.
Investigators believe many of the incidents may be connected to a small group of individuals. But the investigations are ongoing.
Detectives and patrol officers are actively investigating these incidents and have increased patrols citywide to address these concerns.

While these incidents remain under investigation, there are several steps vehicle owners can take to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim:
- Park vehicles in well-lit areas whenever possible

- Never leave a vehicle running and unattended
- Do not leave keys or key fobs inside vehicles

- Report suspicious activity immediately, including individuals checking vehicle door handles or lingering around parked vehicles during overnight hours
