100 years ago

May 8, 1926

Girard, May 8. - W. N. Lyngar, Pittsburg constable, and Norman C. Force, deputy constable ap-pointed by Lyngar, were fined $200 each and costs by Judge D. H. Woolley in division No. 1 of the district court this morning, for misconduct in office. Lyngar and Force pleaded guilty recently when their case was called for trial. The misdemeanor charge had been filed as a substitute for another alleging the solicitation and acceptance of a $25 bribe from a participant in an alleged "petting party."

Attention of hundreds of persons was drawn to the newly painted streetcar which operated along Broadway between the College and Twentieth Street this afternoon, the repainted car being the first demonstration of the manner in which all cars of the Joplin & Pittsburg electric line will appear as soon as they can be painted. Color of the repainted car is orange with dark green trim and produces an effect which greatly Improves the appearance of the carrier.

Reservoirs at the city waterworks have just been given their semi-annual bath, W. J. Lapworth. superintendent, announced this afternoon. Although the reservoirs are bathed by the city's water supply every day in the year, it becomes necessary to give them a thorough scrubbing twice each year. The cleaning process included the draining of the huge water storage reservoirs and scrubbing every inch of the interior walls and bottom. Superintendent Lapworth said the reservoirs were clean enough to eat on when the work was completed today.

A total of 1,926 students pre-enrolled for the Fall 1976 semester of classes at Kansas State College of Pittsburg, an increase of 114 students over last year's pre-enrollment figures, the registrar at Kansas State College of Pittsburg said Friday. The pre-enrollment of new students at the college having previous college work at other institutions increased 11.8 per cent over last year, Dr. Lee R. Christensen, registrar, said. Overall, a 6.3 per cent increase in all enrollment categories was recorded by the college.

While Dean "Gus" Dittman, Frontenac native turned show biz success, will star in "Udell's Printer-76," the musical comedy will also feature many other gifted cast members. Though they are not professional performers, all can be termed "stars" because of the weeks of hard work they've put in to make the show a success. The musical comedy, completely rewritten from om last year's presentation, will be held May 14-19 in the Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium as part of Pittsburg's 100th birthday celebration.

GIRARD - Complaints directed at AAA Ambulance (county ambulance service) last week by members of the Girard Police Department were refuted at Friday's Crawford County Commission meeting by Wally Anthony, co-owner of the ambulance service. Anthony told the commissioners that a heart attack victim the ambulance attendants did not administer oxygen to may have been dead 40 minutes or more before the ambulance was at the Girard home. Anthony was responding to a complaint of the Girard police that his ambulance attendants failed to administer the proper first aid to the victim before making a determination that the person was dead.

GED graduates participating in a ceremony Saturday literally felt the floor move but it wasn't just excitement. "It was awful. All of the sudden we heard this rumbling, and there was a crash," explained Mary Bouray, who was attending the ceremony to show her support her graduating nephew. A support beam in the crawl space under the gym floor at the Family Resource Center partially failed, and the floor suddenly sagged about an inch and a half. The ceremony continued, and since then, no one has used the gym.

The Pittsburg City Commission will deal with a variety of issues from JayCee Ballpark improvements to property demolition at its regular meeting tonight. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 201 W. Fourth St., and will be open to the public. Among the items on the agenda for tonight's meeting: The commission will consider designating 20th Street and part of East 14th Street "main trafficways," the first step toward making improvements to Home Street near the new elementary school eligible for funding with general obligation bonds.

Two area men have been added to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation's Most Wanted List. On Monday, the KBI added Michael w. Hopkins of Baxter Springs and William M. Mulkey to its list of most wanted criminals. Mulkey and Hopkins are being sought by law officers, including the U.S. Marshall's Service, for failure to comply with bond release conditions on original charges of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine
