SOUTHEAST KANSAS — Some of the coolest events to cover are for Special Olympics Kansas. From bowling and bocci ball to track and field and football, competition is always intense and friendly. The atmosphere is positive and full of joy. It is impossible to spend more than 10 minutes at an event an be in a bad mood.
Participation in Special Olympics is growing each year and to keep things running smoothly, volunteers are needed. Duties can range from serving concessions to refereeing a game to handing out medals — whatever is needed to make an event memorable.
“Even though it’s summertime,” said Olivia Ryan, director of the Southeast Region, “we have a huge need for volunteers for our Southeast Region Traditional Bowling Tournament. If you have friends, students, athletes, or anyone participating in summer weight/ athletics programs who may be interested, please help us spread the word and assist us in filling these volunteer positions.”
The bowling tournament is scheduled for July 22 and July 23 at Holiday Lanes in Pittsburg with volunteer shifts available between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers may sign up for one or both days and must be at least 15 years old to participate.
“Many of you have volunteered with us before or have brought students to volunteer,” Ryan added, “and we truly appreciate your continued support. Your willingness to give your time has helped make these events successful for our athletes.”
Anyone interested in volunteering can sign up by clicking soksvolunteer.
“Please share this opportunity with others who may be interested in helping,” Ryan said. “We would love your assistance in filling these remaining spots.”
