Wesslund, Brewer lead PSU to tourney title game
Cooper Wesslund

On another record-setting day for Dagen Brewer, Cooper Wesslund grabbed the spotlight.

Wesslund pounded four extra-base hits and drove in nine runs as top-seeded and No. 4-ranked Pittsburg State decked fourth-seeded Northwest Missouri 21-11 in seven innings Friday in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at Wendell Simmons Field in Edmond, Okla.

The Gorillas (42-9) tied the school record for victories set last year and advance to the championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday against sixth-seeded Emporia State (37-15). The Hornets beat third-seeded Missouri Southern 4-2 in the quarterfinal round and seventh-seeded Missouri Western 14-1 in seven innings in the second semifinal.

Wesslund, a senior second baseman from Lincoln, Neb., ripped two home runs, his fourth and fifth of the season, and two doubles in four official at-bats. He was hit by a pitch on his fifth plate appearances.

Wesslund’s three-run homer to center field capped the Gorillas’ four-run first inning. His bases-loaded double to left-center was the only hit of a five-run third inning that gave PSU a 13-6, and his opposite-field homer to right stretched the lead to 20-6 after four innings.

“Cooper has been awesome all year,” Gorillas coach Brock Buckingham said on his postgame radio show. “He kind of gets put back in the shadows with some of those other guys, but he’s a heck of a baseball player. I’d take nine of him because he really knows the game, and he’s tough. He had a heck of a day today.”

Brewer, senior left fielder from Topeka, drove in four runs to give him 99 for the season, breaking the MIAA record of 97 set by Central Missouri’s Rick Ladjevich in 1994.

Brewer, who is five RBI shy of tying the Division II single-season record, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second inning and slugged a three-run homer during a seven-run fourth inning. Brewer’s bomb, a no-doubter to left field, was his 24th of the season to tie his school record set last year.

Winning pitcher Zach Voss (11-2) gave up eight hits and nine runs (five earned) in five innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Preston Giltner allowed two runs and two hits and fanned one in the last two innings.

The Bearcats (36-16) tallied six runs in the third inning to pull within 8-6, but the Gorillas responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning and seven in the fourth.

“One thing about our guys is they are pretty mature,” Buckingham said. “No guys panicked. We were actually pretty relaxed, like keep having good at-bats. We knew their team wasn’t going to go away quietly. Our guys stepped up and had good at-bats.”

Seven of the Gorillas’ 13 hits went for extra bases against nine Northwest Missouri pitchers. Bearcats starter Logan Brasel (3-4) left the game with an apparent lower back injury after throwing a pitch to the fourth batter he faced.

Eric Bacon had a single and double, drove in two runs and scored four runs to give him 82 for the season. With six runs scored in the last two games, Bacon has broken the school record of 77 by Alex Rodgers last season.

Isaac Webb drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, fielder’s choice in the second and bases-loaded walk in the third.

The Gorillas scored four runs in the second when Landon Bruce’s leadoff double down the right-field line was the only time the baseball left the infield. After Jadyn McNealy and Bacon walked to load the bases, Brewer was hit by a pitch to force in a run, ground balls by Webb and Grant Nottlemann each scored a run, and Webb scored on a wild pitch.

Frank Gall, Jordi Ventura and Michael Good each hit a home run for the Bearcats, who swept the Gorillas in three close games during conference play.
