Late Thursday night, high school softball and baseball teams across Kansas learned their destination for next week’s state tournament quarterfinal games.
Pittsburg’s softball team (22-4) is the No. 5 seed in the Class 5A tournament and plays fourth-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas (23-3) at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Baker University in Baldwin City. The winner advances to the semifinal round on Thursday at Wichita State.
St. Mary’s Colgan’s softball and baseball teams have their Class 2-1A quarterfinal games on Monday at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia.
The Panthers’ softball team (24-3) is seeded fifth and faces fourth-seeded Inman (24-2) at 11 a.m. Monday. The winner advances to the semifinal round on Thursday in Lawrence.
The baseball team (17-7) is seeded seventh and meets second-seeded Spearville (23-2) at 1:15 p.m. That winner advances to the semifinals on Wednesday at Lawrence. However, the site will be moved to Manhattan if the Kansas Jayhawks are the host for a regional tournament, which will be announced Sunday.
In Class 3A, Frontenac’s teams are playing in different locations on Monday.
The Raiders’ softball team (21-4) is seeded No. 4 and plays fifth-seeded Jefferson West (21-6) at 2 p.m. at Baker University in Baldwin City. The winner moves on to the semifinals on Wednesday in Lawrence.
The Raiders’ baseball team (17-4) is the sixth seed and meets No. 3 Burlington (23-2) at 5:45 at Blue Valley West High School in Overland Park. The winner goes to the semifinals on Wednesday at Lawrence or Manhattan.
Girard (21-5) also made the 3A baseball tournament final-8. The seventh-seeded Trojans (21-5) face No. 2 Jefferson West (24-2) at 11 a.m. Monday at Blue Valley West, and the winner advances to the semifinals on Wednesday against the Frontenac-Burlington winner.
