Pittsburg baseball finished the regular season 10-12 after the Purple Dragons won 11-9 on Wednesday against Nevada (Mo.) at historic Jaycee Ballpark.
The Dragons fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first and then built a 11-5 lead after six innings by scoring two runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third and six in the fifth. Nevada closed out the scoring with one run in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Christian Krogen's two-run triple in the fifth proved to be the biggest blow for the Dragons. Max Busch led the way with three hits and four other players had one hit. Beck Fern led the way with three RBI and Krogen, Kash O'Brien and Busch had two each.
The Dragons also worked eight walks against Nevada pitchers Andrew Lynch and Jett Snyder. Kaden Burns did not issue any free passes during his 1 1/3 innings on the mound.
Drake Wilcox earned the win and he allowed five runs (all earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks over five innings. Cole Hayden pitched the sixth and seventh and he allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks over his two innings.
Pittsburg sits in the No. 11 spot in the Class 5A East Regional and it looks as if the Dragons would draw Shawnee Heights (16-9) next week in regional play. KSHSAA releases the brackets for 5A on Saturday.
