Rogers State scored in the final two innings and defeated No. 14 Pittsburg State 5-0 Thursday afternoon in the MIAA Softball Tournament in Emporia, Kan.
The sixth-seeded Hillcats (35-18) and Gorillas (45-9) battled through five scoreless innings. PSU starter Ava Laurent allowed two hits, struck out three batters and walked one.
Raelle Gorman greeted reliever Emma Crabb (15-4) with a single to center field to start the Rogers State sixth inning. She took second when Rylie Bush was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Jaden Jordan’s flyout to right field.
With Saylor Brown batting, Bush stole second base, but the Gorillas successfully appealed that Bush left first base too soon for the second out.
Three pitches later, Gorman came home on a wild pitch. The Gorillas again challenged that she left third base too soon, but it was denied.
Rogers State added four insurance runs in the seventh. A walk and Chloe Cardona’s double put runners at second and third. Baylee King’s bunt scored a run, and singles by Gorman and Brown and a bases-loaded walk to Mariah Belzer each scored a run.
The Gorillas squandered multiple scoring chances and stranded nine baserunners.
Haili Igou walked in the first inning and came around to score on Lexi Davis’ two-out hit down the left-field line. However, the Hillcats’ appeal that Davis left the base early was upheld and ended the inning.
Kadyn Trochim’s single to center and Davis’ double to left-center gave the Gorillas runners at second and third with nobody out in the sixth.
Sailor Hall’s flyball to shallow right field fell, but right fielder Cardona caught the ball on the short hop and threw to catcher Brown to retire Trochim, who had to wait to see if the ball was caught. PSU still had runners at second and third, but Harley Culie struck out pinch-hitter Alleyna Rushing and Kyleigh Lamont to end the inning.
Culie (19-9) fanned 10 in the game.
Heather Arnett had three of the six hits for the Gorillas, who were shut out for the first time since the 2025 season opener – a span of 106 games.
The Gorillas now wait to learn their fate for next week’s Central Regional. They were No. 2 in this week’s ranking.
