CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — Two individuals from McCune sustained serious injuries in a two-vehicle collision in northern Cherokee County Tuesday night.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 7:49 p.m. on Hwy. 69 at Scammon Road, six miles south of Pittsburg on Hwy. 69.
The report stated that a 2019 Ford Fiesta was westbound on Scammon Road while a 2026 International semi tractor hauling a 2025 Great Dane semi-trailer was southbound on Hwy. 69. The driver of the Ford Fiesta failed to yield at the stop sign and drove in front of the International, resulting in a collision at the intersection.
The driver of the Ford Fiesta, 34-year-old James A. Clemens of McCune, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Mercy Hospital Joplin for treatment. The passengers, 45-year-old Christina S. Wood and a two-year-old occupant, did not sustain any injuries but were taken to Mercy Hospital Pittsburg, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The driver of the International, Nathan J. Swenson of Audubon, Iowa, did not suffer any injuries in the collision. However, a passenger in the semi, 29-year-old Mariah K. Galloway of McCune, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Mercy Hospital Pittsburg.
The Kansas Highway Patrol noted that both the drivers and the occupants wore their safety restraints at the time of the crash, and the two-year-old was properly restrained in a child safety seat.
