Girard Legion to hold annual fishing derby

GIRARD, Kan. — A free family-friendly fishing event is set to return to the Girard area this weekend. The event spans nearly three decades.

The George C. Brown American Legion Post 26 Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion are scheduled to hosts their annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday in Greenbush. It is an event that helps introduce children to the outdoors, teach basic angling skills, and strengthen family bonds while fostering an appreciation for conservation.

In year’s past, the event has been held at the pond just east of the American Legion. However, this year’s event is located just under eight miles, east of Girard in Greenbush, located at 947 W. 47 Hwy. Registration begins at 9 a.m. followed by the fishing, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to the Girard American Legion Auxiliary, this year’s event features prizes along with raffles and awards. Each child in attendance is expected to receive a fishing pole along with potential prizes such as an excursion at Grand Lake in Oklahoma. Other prizes include tackle boxes, tents, and more.

Lunch is to be provided and Granny’s Chip Chocolate Ice Cream & Candy Shop, based in Frontenac, is planning to be at the event to serve ice cream. All kids ages 12 years and younger are able to receive free ice cream during the fishing derby.
