BOURBON COUNTY, Kan. — An attempted traffic stop quickly turned into a police chase Thursday night, beginning in Crawford County, leading to an officer-involved shooting in Bourbon County.
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), late Thursday evening around 11:30 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen semi-truck traveling northbound from Pittsburg, driving into oncoming traffic and fleeing from local law enforcement.
Deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office pursued the vehicle after the driver refused an attempted traffic stop. During the pursuit, according to the KBI, the suspect continually drove on the wrong side of the road in the southbound lanes. The deputies attempted to disable the vehicle but were unsuccessful.
Two Crawford County deputies discharged their firearms, striking the suspect and the vehicle as the pursuit continued into Bourbon County. The suspect lost control of the vehicle and was taken into custody, after the truck came to a halt near Hwy. 69 and Indian Road. The suspect was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a regional medical facility, currently in stable condition.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the pursuit as the investigation remains ongoing.
