PITTSBURG, Kan. — In the past, bars and restaurants typically installed TVs to entertain guests, which give them an incentive to stay longer. But recently the trend for eateries is to encourage people to engage with each other rather than stare at another screen.
In the Pittsburg area, several businesses are encouraging people to put down their phones, engage and try new activities.
Andrea Ascanio, owner of The Corner Patio recently launched a “craft menu” which allows patrons to choose a do-it-yourself (DIY) craft kit that includes all materials needed. Patrons can create at their own pace. Ascanio also has guided videos on a YouTube channel in case people get stuck. Crafts include rock painting, embroidery, bag charm, canvas tote bag, clay tic -tac -toe and many more.
“This idea came to me and my mom years ago, but we never truly got it off the ground,” Ascanio said in an email. “We love making things with our hands and we are both very passionate about togetherness and community. My mom, Pamela, has been an integral part of this new project and we can’t wait to see it grow!”
Ascanio said she wants to have a craft of the month to keep the menu fresh.
Other places like TOAST, The Balkan and McKay Street Coffeehouse have board games available for people to play while they dine or sip their coffee.
“We believe that dining out is an experience beyond what's on your plate,” TOAST Co-owner Heather Horton said. “It's about spending time together. Laughing, talking & getting out of your normal routine. Board games and card games are the perfect conduit to connection. They break the ice and make for a positive, joyful experience.”
