‘Gelding smashes Girard track record’
From Our History
With the hoarse cheers of some 3,000 race fans ringing in his ears, Jim Alfring, brown bay gelding owned by J. A. Smith of Memphis, Tenn., today smashed the standing record of the Girard race track in clipping off the distance in 2:09 1/2. The new mark for the mile was set in the first heat of the free-for-all pace, feature event of the eighth annual Crawford County fair's speed program.
