PITTSBURG, Kan. — Two 19-year-old women were arrested Thursday for aggravated endangering a child. Both were employees of The Family Resource Center, according to the Pittsburg Police Department.
According to a release from the PPD, at approximately 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, the Pittsburg Police Department was notified of a child being left unattended in a locked vehicle for “a period of time” at The Family Resource Center, 1600 N Walnut Street.
The police reported that the child was seen by a nurse at the facility and was later taken by the parents to be evaluated by medical professionals. The child was released and returned home with their parents.
An investigation into the incident was conducted, which resulted in the arrest of two employees of The Center. At approximately 4:45 p.m. Aug. 20, 19-year-old Payton Taylor Atwood, of Cherokee, and 19-year-old Maria J. Ocha-De'Leon, of Pittsburg, were both taken into custody and arrested for aggravated endangering a child. Atwood and Ocha-De'Leon were transported to the Crawford County Jail and are currently being held on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.
Atwood and Ocha-De'Leon are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation into this incident is ongoing at this time.
