Kansas celebrates Purple Heart Day
Badge of Military Merit
The Badge of Military Merit, designed by George Washington, is the forerunner of today’s Purple Heart, making it the oldest award in the U.S. military.
TOPEKA, Kan. — In March, Governor Laura Kelly signed HB 2274 designating August 7 as Purple Heart Day. The bill not only established Kansas as a Purple Heart State, but set guidelines and provisions that allow homeless Kansas veterans a path to acquiring a state ID, free of charge, that will allow them to access government programs, employment opportunities, and treatment.
