Guy Wilson Owings, II, born Oct. 19, 1938, passed away July 20, 2026, while visiting his children in Florida. He was surrounded by those who loved him most: his wife, Pam Wingate Owings of Pittsburg, Kansas; his daughter, Sarah Owings of Placida, Florida; and his son, David Owings of Placida, Florida.
Born in Morehouse, Missouri, Guy was the youngest of six children of Virgil and Ruth Peavler Owings. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Helen Davis Owings and his siblings: Betty Smith, Nadine Alliston, Wanda Signaigo, Virgil “Bud” Owings, and Sue Palen. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Guy graduated from Morehouse High School before beginning a remarkable academic journey. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, specializing in Chinese Linguistics. During his military service, he attended Yale University and Texas Tech University. After the military service, he attended the University of Missouri, where he earned his Bachelor's, MBA, and Ph.D.
On Aug. 4, 1973, Guy married Pam Wingate, in Avon, Illinois. Together they built a loving marriage that spanned more than five decades and was marked by devotion, partnership, and a shared commitment to family, education, and community service.
A respected educator, Guy dedicated 37 years to Pittsburg State University, where he served as a Professor of Accounting and, for much of his tenure, as Department Chair.
Guy was also a passionate supporter of Pittsburg State University Athletics, serving for many years as both a loyal fan and booster. His enthusiasm for the university and its students remained strong throughout his life.
Guy will be remembered for his intellect, kindness, appreciation for absurdity, mentorship, patriotism, and unwavering dedication to his family, students, and community. His legacy lives in the many lives he touched through education, service, friendship, and love.
A Celebration of Life will follow the PSU vs. Central Oklahoma football game on Oct. 24 and will be held at the PSU Alumni Center. The Owings family would request that anyone wishing to honor Guy could make donations to the two scholarships in his name: The John Lowe Scholarship in honor of Guy Owings or the Guy W. Owings Excellence in Accounting Education Scholarship.
