Rose Ann Wood, 92, of Pittsburg, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
She was born on March 25, 1934, in Opolis to John G. and Marie Catherine (Jacobs) Major. She attended Opolis school and graduated in 1952 from Crawford Community High School in Cherokee.
She then started a long banking career at the National Bank, 4th and Broadway, now Block 22, working under banking icons, Rex Crowley, Wesley Hess, Leonard Burke, Bill Anderson, and many others. They moved to 3rd and Broadway and she continued there. When it became Nations Bank and then Bank IV. She retired and then worked for First State Bank, which changed to Gold Bank, then M&I. She then retired to look after her husband, Jim, who was in failing health till his passing in 2007.
She was united in marriage to James W. Wood on June 17, 1956, at the First Methodist Church in Pittsburg by Dr. Lloyd Rising. Mr. Wood preceded her in death in June 2007.
She returned to banking at University Bank, now GN Bank, then retired and later worked at National Pizza in the customer service center, then retired in the early 2020’s. She and Jim also operated EFD Package Express from mid-1979 till 1982.
Rose Ann was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was very active until a fall in March 2026. She was a fan of the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas Jayhawks basketball team. She was known to yell at the TV a lot during close games. She will be missed by family and friends.
Survivors include her son, John Gregory Wood, sisters-in-law, Thelma Berry and Betty Capp; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her longtime friend, Norma Massa and her small dog, Dotty.
She was preceded by her husband, Jim, parents, in-laws, Carl and Goldie Wood, brothers-in-law, Gaylen Berry and Carl Ed Wood, nephews, Tobias Book and Brent Wood.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, at the Mt. Olive Cemetery with Rev. Mark Chambers officiating. Friends are requested to meet at the cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Brenner Mortuary to sign the register book. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or a memorial of the donor’s choice.
