As Little Balkans Days are around the corner, I thought it would be fitting to reflect on F.W. Brinkerhoff, the man responsible for the quote my wife, Linda, uses in her “Army of Amazons” stage play and repeats around the state in her Humanities Kansas presentations: “If you look at a map for the Kansas Balkans you won’t find them, but if you look at Kansas history you can’t miss them.” F. W. Brinkerhoff — editor and publisher of this newspaper for over 55 years — was a confidante of statesmen, an accomplished historian, and a community leader who had a flair for political drama and unforgettable editorials. Little, if anything, escaped his notice.
