Yes, 51 Pittsburg State track and field athletes – 26 women and 25 men – have qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships on May 21-23 at Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kan.
Both PSU teams slipped to No. 2 in this week’s USTFCCCA national rating index behind the Grand Valley State men and West Texas A&M women.
The Gorillas’ men’s team has three top marks in Division II – Jack Haukap in the hammer throw (233 feet, 4 inches), Caden Williams in the 400 meters (45.61 seconds) and the 4x100 relay team of Kemarri Stewart, Braylon Thompson, Logan Davis and Ilias Garcia (39.61).
The 4x400 relay team of Woyn Chatman, Nate Watson, Davis and Williams is ranked second in D2 (3:04.56). Davis also ranks second in the 400 (45.85), and Leo Chauchard is second in the decathlon (7,282 points).
Grayson Smith qualified third in the pole vault (18-0.50), and Tyrone Jackson is fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (13.65). Drake Stapleton qualified fifth in the shot put (60-10), and Dylan Sprecker ranks sixth in the 1500 (3:40.70).
The other men’s qualifiers are Garcia (10.19) and Thompson (10.30) in the 100, Chatman (46.05) and Watson (46.64) in the 400, Eli Gilmore in the 800 (1:48.35), Na’Koriyon James in the 110 hurdles (13.70), Xavier Byers in the high jump (6-11.75), Britton Gage in the pole vault (16-11.50), Antwan Dawson in the triple jump (50-3.25), Isaiah Webster in the long jump (24-6.50) and triple jump (49-9.25), Stapleton in the discus (177-10), Brennan Booerd in the discus (176-8) and hammer throw (207-6), Trace Hanchett in the javelin (220-6) and Matthew Malstrom (7,054) and Drew Wilhite (7,001) in the decathlon.
Griouard Weddington and Amar Williams will serve as alternates on the relay teams.
For the women’s team, Breanne Peters enters the meet as the national leader in the pole vault with a clearance of 14 feet, 0.50 inches.
Four more entries rank among the top-3 as Bethany Umbarger is second in the high jump (5-10.75), Zyra Shivers is second in the 100 hurdles (13.30) and Blakelee Winn is second in the heptathlon (5,719 points) and third in the long jump (20-9).
Belle Peters and Cannon Booker are tied for fourth place in the pole vault at 13-8.50, and Jazmine Williamson ranks fourth in the long jump (20-7.75) and sixth in the high jump (5-8.50).
The Gorillas qualified both relay teams – Isabelle Abdouch, Kiara Brown, Nikole Cozort and Mikah Edwards in the 4x100 (45.19) and Cozort, Abdouch, Kinleigh Hall and Edwards in the 4x400 (3:37.88). Edwards also qualified in the 400 (53.73), and Brown qualified in the 200 (23.47).
Lily Brown qualified in three events – high jump (5-7.25), triple jump (41-3.75) and heptathlon (5,103). Makayla Pavelka qualified in the long jump (19-11.75) and triple jump (40-0).
Three Gorillas qualified in the javelin – Alycia Cosens at 162-11, Maddie Olds at 154-7 and Claire Vanderweide at 148-9.
Other women’s qualifiers are Kayvon Nubine (13.51) and McKinlee Walker (13.69) in the 100 hurdles, Eva Williams (13-4.50) and Quincey Turner (13.75) in the pole vault, Brooklyn Baker in the long jump (20-2.50), Alexa Binkley in the triple jump (40-2.75), Kelci Locke in the discus (160-6), Abby Lasiter in the hammer throw (188-9) and Payton Phillips in the heptathlon (5,251).
