GIRARD, Kan. -- Some of the youngest exhibitors at the Crawford County Fair were up early, Friday, for the Bucket Calf competition – an event that features boys and girls, mostly between 9 and 12, and the calves they have raised over the summer. The emphasis in Bucket Calf projects is on learning about the feeding, care and management of an animal, including record keeping and the various responsibilities required. For a Bucket Calf project, the youngsters select a calf born typically in March or April and hand raise it until it can be shown at the fair.
