PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Pittsburg Police Department joins the nationwide campaign “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

The safety campaign started Sunday, Aug. 23, and runs through Monday, Sept. 7. During this time, drivers can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on local roads.

The Pittsburg PD stated in a release that according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, even a small amount of alcohol can affect a person’s ability to drive safely. Driving impaired can lead to an arrest or traffic crashes that result in injuries or death. For a first-time driving impaired offense, the driver could pay up to $10,000 in fines or legal fees.

Pittsburg PD is encouraging drivers to plan and make arrangements before drinking.

• Designate a sober driver
• Use a rideshare service
• Don’t let friends drive impaired
• Call law enforcement if you suspect a driver is impaired
