GIRARD, Kan. — Crawford County Counselor Jim Emerson announced at Tuesday’s commission meeting that the state legislature in Topeka has formally introduced Senate Bill 162 on Monday morning. Sponsored by Riley County, Kansas, the bill, if approved, gives Riley County the authority to enforce ordinances on nuisance properties that are typically strewn with junk, trash, overgrown with grass, deemed unsightly and pose a possible danger to the public at large. The bill would also grant Riley County the authority, should the county have to clean the property, to collect the clean-up costs directly or levy an additional tax on the property.
