PITTSBURG, Kan. — Every resident of Pittsburg and Frontenac has travelled down Atkinson Road, and many Crawford County residents have driven past the Atkinson Municipal Airport without knowing where the name came from, or that there is even a monument at the airport honoring its namesake. Born in Indiana in 1883, Lewis Murray Atkinson, better known as Tommy, first came to Pittsburg in 1915. As a boy, Atkinson was interested in electricity, engaging in that pursuit to the point that his mother was afraid to walk through her own home for fear of tripping on a wire or being shocked.
