Myron Scott, photographer for the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News, is credited as having started the soapbox derby after witnessing youths racing their own handcrafted cars in 1933. After securing the idea with a patent and winning a sponsor in Chevrolet, he took the soapbox derby to the national stage in 1934 with the All-American Soap Box Derby.
