This excerpt from “Frogdancer,” Arma native Frank Jeler Jr.’s memoir, calls to mind sanitary facilities used here in the Little Balkans back in the day as well as a bit of folk architecture. I don’t remember any cesspools, but there were still quite a few outhouses in the Republic of Frontenac in the 1950s when I was growing up there — some fell prey to the kind of pranks outlined in Jeler’s story. I remember it was sometimes referred to as “the backhouse.” My aunt Doris called it “the privy” (for private).
