100 Years Ago Feb. 1, 1923 Robert Howell, 907 N. Elm St., a shotfirer at the Jackson-Walker mine No. 16 near Capaldo was killed by suffocation at 7 o’clock last night following an explosion in the mine just before he completed shooting the entry. His body was found by the mine rescue team approximately 1,500 feet from the bottom and was not burned by the explosion.
