This week, in looking through the centennial edition of this newspaper, I discovered Margaret Grandle, a dynamic woman who was a force in the early politics and public spirit of not only Pittsburg but also the state of Kansas. Although Mrs. Margaret Grandle might not be termed a liberationist by today’s standards, she helped other women learn how to take a greater responsibility in the affairs of government when such movements were not popular. An active Democrat, Mrs. Grandle was the first woman to seek State public office in Kansas, running as a candidate for Secretary of State in 1916, a mere four years after women were granted state suffrage (In 1912 Kansas adopted a constitutional amendment granting women full voting rights).
