June 3, 1926

Defense counsel, for W. E. Tindel, Pittsburg patrolman charged with murder for the shooting of Sam Lyle, jr., on the night of Dec. 18, 1925, presented unlooked for evidence this morning when testimony was introduced showing that the gun, which Lyle was believed to have thrown from his motor car just before being arrested, was found the following morning near the scene of the shooting.

Persons who spend their vacation time bettering themselves for their profession represent the best in that profession, President W. A. Brandenburg declared this morning in a welcoming address to about 2,200 summer school students at the Pittsburg Teachers College in Carney hall auditorium. Enrollment figures at the College have swelled past the 2,500 mark, it was said today, and the big auditorium, which seats 2,200, was filled beyond seating capacity during President Brandenburg's address.

Coal from over the Pittsburg district will be tested soon to determine its adaptability to being profitably coked. Agreement was reached by members of the Pittsburg Realtors Association last night to sponsor and finance the tests. Arrangements already have been made by the real estate dealers through a large coking plant to have the tests made. Specific arrangements, such as the amount of coal from different depth veins needed to run the tests, yet are to be made.

June 3, 1976

A Pittsburg construction company is suing the city of Clyde in Cloud County for $86,746 for breach of a construction contract. Heckert Construction Co., Route 3, filed suit in Crawford County District Court Wednesday afternoon asserting that Clyde had reneged on a contract for work on the city's municipal park and swimming pool. A $109,000 contract signed Feb. 4, 1975 called for a joint construction effort by Spartan of Wichita, Inc. and Heckert Construction, owned by James A. Heckert, the suit says.

Elm Acres Youth Home, Inc., is now located in its first permanent home since the former home was destroyed by fire in January of 1975. Residents of the home have been living in the new facilities, which are located back to back at 1002 E. Madison and 1001 E. Jackson, for about three weeks. Prior to the opening of the new facilities, Elm Acres residents were living at 307 W. Rose. There are presently 18 boys living in the two homes, which have a capacity of 20.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Atty. Gen Curt Schneider said Wednesday his office is investigating possible violations of Kansas law in two contributions to a California committee supporting nuclear power. Schneider said he talked to the California secretary of state and was told Kansas Gas and Electric Co., Wichita, had contributed a total of $3,000 to the California organization. He said he was told Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Topeka, had contributed $4,000.

Area residents swarmed around Pittsburg Saturday in search of bargains at the city-wide rummage sale. The economic slowdown may have boosted business for the sales, according to Pat Arnold, who has held numerous garage sales. "Everything has gotten so high now, including gasoline and groceries," she noted. "I've seen a big increase this year over last year. Last year we'd get two or three carloads of people at a time to our rummage sale. This year we've been getting six or seven carloads at a time."

The Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce has announced six finalists for the Small Business of the Year Award. These finalists were nominated by their peers. The winner will be announced at the 2001 Business Appreciation Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Memorial Auditorium. This year's finalists include A.A. Jameson, Allen and Adam Jameson; Century 21 Cobb Realty, Bob Cobb; Custom Awards Plus, Jim Berger; The Mall Deli, Jim and Diane Martino; Marrone's Food Service Inc., Ron, Albert and Dale Marrone; and Southside Promotions, Dave Sorrick.

ARMA - The city's sewer project, citizens' concerns over the council's action last month against reappointing Gene Arnold as police chief and a bill the city received for work done in 1998 on U.S. Highway 69 Business will be some of the continuing items on the Arma City Council agenda for the council's regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday.
