Excerpted stories in Crawford County newspaper archives 100 Years Ago March 16, 1923 The long-heralded slander suit of Hal J. Neifing against John F. Bender, superintendent of schools, for $5,000 damages, came to an end yesterday in district court, when a motion was made to dismiss the suit at the cost of the plaintiff. The suit was brought last spring, before the close of school, after the board of education refused to re-employ Neifing as a teacher in the commercial department at the senior high school. Merchandise valued at approximately $1,500 and consisting of high-grade suits, silk shirts, hose, ties and hats was stolen from the Degen clothing store in a robbery last night.
