David T. “Dave” Meyer, 74, of Franklin, Kansas, a longtime southeast Kansas auctioneer and small business owner, died at 8:27 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Girard Medical Center in Girard, Kansas. Dave was born December 5, 1951, in Girard, Kansas, the son of Ted and Mary “Jacquinot” Meyer. He was raised in Girard and graduated from Girard High School with the Class of 1969. He later attended Columbus Vo-Tech, where he earned an associate degree in diesel mechanics.

On June 14, 1980, Dave married Edra Adams at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Girard. For more than 46 years, Dave and Edra built a life together centered around family, hard work, friendship and the small business they operated together that became well known throughout southeast Kansas.

Dave was quiet and even a little bashful by nature—until it was time for an auction. Put a microphone in his hand and Dave simply shined.

For decades, Dave and Edra were partners in Meyer Auction Service, conducting auctions throughout southeast Kansas. Dave had an unmistakable cadence, often “singing the high notes” as the bidding climbed. His dry, quick wit was just as much a part of an auction. If someone worried about rain in the forecast, Dave might point out that a 45 percent chance of rain meant there was a 55 percent chance it wouldn’t—and assure everyone it would be fine because he had “called the Pope.” He always had a witty comeback or one-liner ready, sometimes delivered so quietly that Edra was the only one who caught it.

Meyer Auction Service was truly a family business. Dave and Edra built and operated the business as partners, each with an important role in making an auction come together. Their daughter, Angela, grew up at her parents’ auctions. From the little girl making her way through the crowd to the young woman Dave and Edra trusted at the checkout window, auctions became part of the rhythm of Meyer family life.

Through Meyer Auction Service, Dave and Edra were entrusted with selling estates and generations of belongings for families throughout the area. Dave understood the responsibility that came with that trust and approached his work with hard work, integrity, friendship and a commitment to doing things well. Those were the same values he passed on to Angela through his example, love and guidance. He took tremendous pride in watching her carry those values into her own life, career and service to her community. Of all her accomplishments, however, what mattered most was the person she became—and Dave was simply proud to be her dad.

He also enjoyed reminding friends in the auction crowd that once the auction started, “all friendships were off”—usually with a smile that suggested otherwise.

Edra was Dave were partners in every sense of the word—in marriage, in Meyer Auction Service and in the life they built together. She was beside him through more than 46 years of marriage, countless auctions and a lifetime of shared experiences. Dave’s love for Edra and Angela was much like Dave himself—quiet, constant and unmistakable. They were the center of his life.

Dave was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Girard and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Edra, of the home; his daughter, Angela Meyer of Arma, Kansas; his brother, Gilbert Meyer of Pittsburg, Kansas; and four nieces and nephews, Ted, Tracy, Becky and Jennifer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Mary Meyer, and his brother, Teddy Meyer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2026, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Girard, Kansas, with Father David Vacca as celebrant. The Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Friday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, where the family will receive friends until 7:30 p.m. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday at the Bedene Chapel. Burial will be at Pittsburg Garden of Memories Cemetery.
