100 Years Ago Dec. 31, 1922-Jan. 2, 1923 The forces of Alexander Howat in District 14 of the United Mine Workers repudiated International President John L. Lewis and the international union, in the election here, according to official returns made public yesterday. William Bogartz of Minden, long regarded as aligned with the Howat faction, was elected district president over Joe Clark, international candidate, by a vote of 1,930 to 1,174. The autonomy of District 14 was officially restored New Year’s Day.
