Robert Paul Kickel, 42 years of age, a lifelong resident of Pittsburg and vicinity, died at 10:15 o'clock this morning at his home, 204 North Miles, following an illness of three months. Death was caused by a complication of Brights disease and high blood pressure. Mr. Kickel was in the employ of the city water department as an installer of meters at the time of his death. He was born five miles southeast of Pittsburg July 24, 1883.
Girard, June 9 – Crawford County yesterday shipped a carload of lambs to Kansas City and sold them at the top market price. The shipment was made by the Farmers' Union Shipping Association, with about 25 consigners. There were 133 head in the shipment, of which 119 were spring lambs The lambs averaged 67.4 pounds each and sold at $17.50 a 100 pounds, each netting about $11.80.
Girard, June 9. - H. W. Shideler, publisher of the Girard Press and state representative from the north district of Crawford County, today announced that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Congress from the Third District. He will oppose W. H. Sproul of Sedan, present congressman, who is seeking renomination. Mr. Shideler has served five years in the Kansas House, being speaker pro temp at the last session.

Eight Langdon Lane residents suing a neighbor for devaluing their property with his "unsanitary and malodorous" animals, withdrew their request for a temporary injunction from Crawford County District Court Judge Don Musser Monday. Larry Handshy "got rid of his hogs" and his Langdon Lane neighbors decided not to request an injunction to have the court reduce the number of animals which Handshy may keep.
Plans for administering swine flu vaccinations in Crawford County are in the very early planning stages, but already county health officials are wondering whether more than four or five per cent of county residents will want the vaccination. "If we can get the people motivated, then maybe we will vaccinate 10 to 15 per cent," Dr. Wesley Hall, county health officer, said Tuesday. Dr. Hall met with county health nurses Genevieve Ristau and Ellen Marie Beasley.
The final day for filing for any township, city, county or state office for the Aug. 3 state primary is noon June 21, county election officers in Crawford, Bourbon and Cherokee counties said Tuesday. To file for township or county office, candidates should file with the county clerks in the three counties. A fee of one per cent of the candidate's 1975 salary is charged for filing for county offices by declaration of intent, and $1 is charged for filing for township trustee, treasurer or clerk.

Teens placed into residential group homes like Elm Acres and Kaw Valley in Pittsburg are children facing enormous stress. The Phoenix Program provides these children "a new beginning," in keeping with the myth of the phoenix, which is burned in a fire, and rises newborn from its own ashes. These children could be, indeed, rising from the ashes of their former lives. Henrickson said children don't just learn the academics in their educational program. A new class in life skills also teaches them how to adapt to a "normal" lifestyle. They are given rewards such as trips, and consequences that help feed into their performance levels at home.
More than 1,000 riders and support personnel, including several area persons, are participating in Biking Across Kansas, a 520-mile ride across the entire breadth of the state. The ride, which started this morning, is divided into three routes. Riders met in Wichita and were taken by bus to their starting points. The most northern route, the B Route, started at the Kansas-Colorado line west of Tribune, while the middle route, known as the A Route, started at the Kansas-Colorado line west of Syracuse.
ARCADIA - Arcadia has been awarded a $600,000 Community Development Block Grant to go toward housing rehabilitation and construction of a new community center, the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing announced Friday. Arcadia was one of seven cities receiving a total of $3.4 million in housing rehabilitation grants. Russell also received a $600,000 grant, which will partially go toward improving the city's water system.
