Solo trips and Seth Meyers
GenXGirl

Have you ever taken a solo trip? Does the thought frighten you not to have someone with you on excursion out? Do you ever go out to eat by yourself? How about a movie matinee for some alone time? If you said yes to any of these questions, you are my kind of person!

I have been judged for enjoying alone time to just hear my own thoughts. I think I can trace this back to my days in middle and high school where I would walk for miles around the Missouri countryside to escape into my own stories and away from life. People, for me in the start of my life, were disappointing and always leaving. It was best to just keep to me.

I also talk for a living which for an introvert can be quite exhausting. It is very enjoyable to go to an event or to another city and just see who I run into or maybe I just don't talk at all.

I have taken many solo trips to Kansas City, Lawrence, and Springfield over my lifetime. Recently, I took a weekend to see Seth Meyers, former "SNL" Weekend Update actor, and now famous for "Late Night with Seth Meyers" on NBC. I love his acerbic wit, hot takes on politics, and he has a couple of hilarious comedy bits he does called "Ya Burnt" and "Back in my day." During Covid, he did his show in his attic and had some of the most absurd and unhinged comedy that I have ever seen. Boredom does really help the creative spirit.

So, when I saw back in October that he was coming to The Midland, I just knew that it was fate for me to see him! But alas, the tickets were incredibly expensive and my travel friend had prom that night, so I put it aside that maybe I could just go to New York next year when I am in better shape after my surgery.

So, March came around, and I looked to see how much tickets were. The 7pm showing was totally sold out...but a 4pm showing had been added and the prices were much cheaper! Could I finally get to see my comedy hero?

Yes. That is exactly what happened. I traveled to KC downtown to see Seth Meyers BY. MYSELF.

The show was phenomenal and I was only three rows back smack dab in the middle. Seth came out confident and looked exactly how he does on tv. Tall, sophisticated, and definitely a Gen X-er. The wit, sarcasm, and sticking it to the government was all on full display. If you have seen his popular "A Closer Look" segment, a lot of the humor drew from that type of subject matter. It was worth the time and money to get to see him live.

But, part of the solo trip excursion that does give me pause, is that I was sitting between two couples. One couple who were quiet and enjoying their evening and another couple who were deep into their White Claw cups and decided to be my new best friends. It is like people see me out by myself and project that I am some lonely spinster that needs company. Uh no. I am very happy to sit, be quiet, and observe people.

I did visit my friend who moved to KC last year. It was very sweet because she said I am her hero for driving not only to KC by myself, but also driving downtown and across to Blue Springs where she lives. I also told someone else about driving to Kansas City by myself and they said I was brave. I think because when I was 23 and flew to South Korea solo that a two hour drive north is no big deal.

I do encourage you at whatever age to take a solo trip and see what happens. You might find yourself again...or a new best friend.

See you on the flip side.
