UPDATE1: Int'l treaty recommends trade curbs on all eels despite Japan's opposition

The secretariat of an international treaty regulating trade of endangered species has recommended adopting a proposal to impose export restrictions on all eel species despite opposition from Japan, a document showed Wednesday. If the proposal is adopted at the conference of the parties to the Washington Convention, which is scheduled to take place in Uzbekistan in November and December, a document such as an export permit, issued by the exporting country, will be required for eels to be traded, a move that could cause the price of the fish to surge in Japan. The proposal, submitted by the European Union and others, must be accepted by at least two-thirds of the voting parties at the conference in Samarkand.
