Jack Haukap and Dylan Sprecker set school records to highlight Pittsburg State’s performances Saturday in its Almost Last Chance Invitational track and field meet at the Russ Jewett Outdoor Track and Field Complex.
In all, the No. 1-ranked Gorillas posted 36 NCAA Division II qualifying marks – 17 men, 19 women – in their final meet before the national championships May 21-23 in Emporia, Kan. National qualifiers will be announced Tuesday.
Haukap broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 233 feet, 4 inches.
Sprecker broke the school record in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 48.29 seconds. The Gorillas’ Eli Gilmore (1:48.35) and Caden Uthe (1:48.82) also broke the former school mark in the event.
Sprinter Ilias Garcia ran a season-best 10.19 seconds in the 100 meters. He ran 10.31 on Friday while finishing second at the Arkansas Twilight meet in Fayetteville.
Other season bests went to Isaiah Webster in the triple jump (49-9.25) and Brennan Boord in the hammer throw (207-6).
More first-place finishers for PSU were Woyn Chatman in the 200 (21.03), Tyrone Jackson in the 110 hurdles (13.65), Victor Morfin in the high jump (6-8.75) and Leo Chauchard in the long jump (24-1.75).
The Gorilla women’s team had four season-best performances – Makayla Pavelka in the long jump (19-11.75), Abby Lasiter in the hammer throw (188-9), Rachel Wilson in the high jump (5-7.25) and the 4x100 relay team of Isabel Abdouch, Kiara Brown, Nikole Cozort and Mikah Edwards (45.19).
Other event winners were Kinleigh Hall in the 400 (54.49), Zyra Shivers in the 100 hurdles (13.33), Tessa Turner in the 3000 steeplechase (12:41.20), Breanne Peters in the pole vault (13-11.75) and Alexa Binkley in the triple jump (40-1.25).
